Your Face’s Left Side is More Attractive Than The Right One

Many of us spend hours in front of the mirrors with our camera phones just trying to determine the most flattering side of our face. A new research has made it easier for us by scientifically proving that human’s face is generally more eye-pleasing on the left side.

The result provides reasoning for the old portraitists’ tendency to paint left profile of the subjects. The study, published in the journal Experimental Brain Research by Wake Forest University psychology department was initiated by professor Dr. James Schirillo and his co-author, Kelsey Blackburn. It explains that the left side of the face tends to show more expressions – which is rated as more attractive.

Thirty-seven male and female students were asked to view 10 black&white photos of males and females. Researchers then observed the pupil dilation during the process. Previous research has shown that gazing at pleasant images increases pupil size, while less pleasant images cause the pupil to constrict.

“Our findings provide support for a number of concepts; for instance the notions of lateralised emotion and the right hemispheric dominance with the right side of the brain controlling the left side of the face during emotional expression,” the authors explained.
